Google isn’t everything!

Here’s an idea, for those of you who have a blog or website, which you would like to grow quickly and without spending a penny on anything!

Ask most people what the secret to a successful blog or website is and the word Google will come into the conversation pretty quickly.  We talk about search engine optimisation (SEO), but it’s REALLY Google Optimisation.  In the UK, for example, around 9 out of 10 searches are now conducted via Google!

Because of this, companies and individuals are going to extreme lengths to attract ‘hits’ from Google.

But, what if you could succeed WITHOUT Google?

What if there was another way to get stacks of high quality people reading and commenting on a blog – something that did not need Google whatsoever?

What if there was a way to put the success of a blog or website back into the hands of the person / people who own it – and OUT of the hands of Google?  Well, this post from my Marketing Blog shows how I have been able to generate a massively successful blog, based around people, community and networking – without any help from Google!  I have also achieved all this in a matter of weeks and without spending a penny on pay-per-click or anything else!

If you would like to take control of your blog’s growth away from the search engines, take a look and see an alternative approach!

WordPress ransom?

Pay WordPress to remove Google adwords?

Yesterday, WordPress.com announced that it will deliver Google AdWord adverts into the posts and tags of its users blogs – unless they pay WordPress.com $30 a year NOT TO!

.
A weird approach to revenue generating

Various people have referred to this $30 demand as a threat and even ‘tribute’ (or extortion money.)  WordPress surely need to monetize their business – but the ‘usual’ approach is to charge users for what you give them – not to charge them to have something horrible removed – which they never asked for in the first place!

Steve Crudden said “It’s like downloading a FREE software program, which deliberately screws up your computer, and then being charged $30 by the company who ‘gave’ you the FREE software, to have it removed!”

The current approach means people who are opposed to having their work used by Google to generate advertising revenue – but who are too young to pay or too poor to pay, will either have to pay up or leave!

Many WordPress bloggers are based in poor countries and just don’t have the $30 needed to have these adverts removed from their blogs.  Remember, they also have no say in what adverts WordPress decide to plaster onto their post and they get no payment.

WordPress also stated today that they will not be revenue sharing with their bloggers or even allowing their bloggers to run their own adverts.  Apparently, it’s too difficult to set up?

I shall be following this with interest!

Advertising on WordPress.com

Jim Connolly – jimsmarketingblog.com
For a couple of years, WordPress.com have very occasionally inserted Google AdWords advertisements into the posts on blogs hosted on wordpress.com.

As of today, WordPress have announced that this blog and all other blogs hosted on WordPress.com will have these adverts inserted into them – unless we pay WordPress.com NOT to!

Obviously, there is a lot of talk among my fellow bloggers, that its likely there will be a lot more of these low-class ads inserted into blogs; so that they become a big enough pain in the ass for people to pay to have them removed!

I have no issue with this – however, these adverts are NOT endorsed by me!

Also, I have no say or control over what advertisements WordPress.com decide to show – In fact, I won’t even be able to see them!

WordPress.com is a free service and has to support itself somehow.  On my main blog http://jimsmarketingblog.com I have paid them their ‘ransom’ and had all advertising stripped from it.  If you don’t want to see those horrible adword advertisements here, let me know and I will get them removed.

To make it in sales, fish for whales!

By Jim Connolly – www.jimconnolly.com
When I started my first sales job, over 20 years ago, my boss gave me a piece of sales and marketing advice that has helped me generate millions of pounds worth of sales – and I am going to share it with you right now!

“To make it in sales, fish for whales!”

I asked my former boss what his comment about fishing for whales actually meant.  He explained:

“Jim, if you go fishing and you catch 10 goldfish, you won’t even fill a cup – but if you catch 10 whales, you will fill half the beach!”

.
Sales leverage

With that simple explanation, he taught me how the amount of time and effort required to win a £50,000 sale, was not a great deal more than it took to win a sale of £5,000.  This simple idea totally blew my mind!  It was my introduction to what I know today as leverage.

I immediately realised that if I wanted to succeed in sales, I needed to prioritise my sales efforts and focus on where I could deliver most value as a salesperson – because that’s where all those whales are!

If you want to dramatically improve your sales figures, make sure your time and energy is invested wisely – fishing for whales and not goldfish!

Avoid ‘toilet paper’ web design!

By Jim Connolly – www.jimconnolly.com
Marketing is all about developing trust.  This is why I am always totally amazed, when I see an apparently legitimate company, using the exact same ‘toilet paper web design’ as used by online criminals, scammers and con artists!

.
What is a ‘toilet paper web design’?

I coined the phrase ‘toilet paper web design’ a year ago.  It refers to that ugly, hard-sell design style, where web pages are fairly narrow BUT REALLY, REALLY, REALLY LONG!  They just roll on and on like a long narrow roll of toilet paper (hence the name!)

Usually, these over-long pages use lots of different font colours and font sizes, plus pictures of expensive cars, piles of money or sometimes both!  There’s way too much use of underlined words and highlighted text – they look like a total mess!  Some even show fake copies of financial records and fake testimonials about whatever scam they are trying to fool you into signing up for.

They then end with a super, limited offer; for you to get a ‘bundle’ worth 299.99, for just 24.99!  The bundle is either membership of something or a photoshop image of a box, which looks like a 1970’s soap powder box!

.
Legitimate businesses should use legitimate marketing!

When someone visits a website, they immediately form their all-important first impression of that website and the person or business behind it! If they see you using the same online marketing style as a scammer, you are really in trouble!  Your image will be warning them NOT to go within a mile of you – that’s not good for your marketing!

Unbelievably, some of the most common users of toilet paper web design are legitimate business coaches, trainers and consultants! This con artist template is fine for con artists.  However, if you have a legitimate business with a legitimate product or service, it’s crazy to try and emulate what criminals do.

Whenever I have spoken to legitimate businesses, who use the toilet paper web design approach, they always say they did it after either reading some ebook or after seeing a site that claimed to be successful, using the same approach.

An ebook can be written and posted to the Internet in minutes and a scammer will never admit their site is not working!  They usually have dozens of sites and rely on each one finding enough vulnerable people to make a small profit!

If you know a legitimate business that’s using this approach – point them to this article and help them avoid being wrongly associated with Internet scumbags!

Good marketing advice?

By Jim Connolly – www.jimconnolly.com
I have just been reading some dreadful marketing advice; given by a self-proclaimed ‘marketing guru,’ to the owner of a small business. The advice was in answer to a question posted on Twitter.  The advice was totally incorrect and showed that this so-called marketing ‘guru’ didn’t even possess a basic understanding of marketing.
.

I checked-out the guru’s website and…

marketing tips and adviceBecause the advice was so obviously given by someone with no marketing background, I was curious and decided to check out her website.  In seconds you could see that this lady was clueless when it came to marketing!

Her website was horrible.  It lacked even basic Search Engine Optimisation, the copy writing (wording) was shockingly poor and the site looked really ‘cheap!’

The site was littered with marketing buzz-words, and as you would expect, there were the obligatory links to various affiliate marketing programs promising to make you RICH RICH RICH!!
.

Bad marketing advice can kill a small business!

We live in an age where anyone can set up a website or blog and claim to be an expert on anything!  That’s why, as a respected name in marketing, I decided to start a website a couple of years ago – www.jimconnolly.com – that just GIVES AWAY FREE MARKETING information to anyone who wants it. No, you don’t even have to subscribe to anything or register – it’s ‘just there’ for you to read, listen to and enjoy the results!

Small businesses and those just starting out, rely heavily on free advice.  I wanted to make sure there was a 100% free, reliable marketing resource for them, which they could use to massively improve their sales results. Because I base all the marketing information at jimconnolly.com on ideas I have used to generate millions in sales for clients and myself, people know they can trust the advice there.
.

Jim who? – Never heard of you!

If you don’t already know who I am, I have been a marketing professional for over 20 years and I have run my own successful, international marketing business for the past 13 years.  I have generated many, many millions of pounds and dollars worth of sales and my marketing material now reaches millions of people each year, spanning over 70 countries.  My newsletter is read by thousands of people on every continent and my audio programs are used all over the world.  I have also contributed to programming on The BBC, ITV and Channel 4 in the UK and CBS and CNN in North America.

I hope you find my ideas and posts useful. I am adding new material all the time and I encourage you to leave a comment and share your thoughts with other readers. Please feel free to share this blog with your friends, using the buttons below!

How to spot new opportunities & improve client retention!

By Jim Connolly – www.jimconnolly.com
If you are the owner of a business or someone involved in marketing, you should regularly ask your clients for feedback.  Here are two REALLY good reasons why!

2 reasons why YOU need client feedback:

Firstly, it allows you to spot opportunities that you would have missed AND avoid problems before they happen.  For example, if you ask your clients what additional services they would like you to offer, and a uniformed reply comes back – you have just identified a whole new income stream for your business!

Secondly, it can help you spot if a particular client is unhappy or thinking of leaving!  Clients who are disgruntled are often among the first to reply to feedback requests!  By listening to their problems and resolving them, you can reduce the number of clients you lose. This is an excellent way to quickly improve client retention.

A simple email, asking clients what they think about some of the key elements of your services is all you need.  Ask them to score each section on a scale of 1 to 5 and see what comes back.  Always provide a section for them to leave a comment, idea or suggestion.

The answers are often very illuminating – AND ALWAYS useful!

PS: My marketing blog is a great place to go, if you want regular, no nonsense marketing material for your business! You can find it here.

Learning from your mistakes?

Learning from your mistakes is essential if you want to live a happy, healthy and fulfilling life.  It’s also really helpful if you can learn from other people’s mistakes too – but it’s essential (as a minimum) that you learn from your own past errors.
.

A 60 year old kid?

I overheard two people speaking last week, as I was waiting to be served at my favourite lunch spot.  One commented to the other that there were some road works planned, for the main route between where she lived and where she worked.

She then extolled; “well, I’ll just have to tell the boss to expect me in fifteen minutes late, while they are working on the road!”

The person speaking was not a child or even a young adult - but a lady in her late fifties or more!

However, she seemed to be either unaware (or totally disinterested) in the fact that she was displaying a child-like attitude to responsibility.  As far as she was concerned, the correct way to deal with the road works, was to pass the problem over to her employer – rather than take responsibility and just leave home fifteen minutes earlier.

I was not remotely surprised when she THEN went on to complain at the fact that her income had not increased in years; “even though prices have increased so much lately!”  I’m guessing her boss doesn’t have her name at the top of the list for promotions or raises!.
.

Repeating the same mistakes

Wisdom only comes with age, if you learn from past experiences.  That way, the more experiences you have, the more you learn and the wiser you become.  Otherwise, age has no value.  Just ‘ticking another year off’ doesn’t make you any wiser by itself.

Sadly, for many people, the first day of January is not the start of a new year – it’s simply the chance to re-live the same old year over and over and over again!  They moan about their situation, like the person in the above example, yet they do nothing to make their situation better.  They complain – but stay the same!
.

The inoculation theory of education

The solution is to make sure that you don’t subscribe to ‘the inoculation theory of education’.  This is the theory that says when ‘the average person’ leaves school or university, they treat their qualifications or graduation as an inoculation against ever having to learn anything ever again.  Sure, they say things like; “You’re never too old to learn”, but it’s just lip service – it’s the right thing to say – however, they don’t actually believe it.
.

Cause and effect

Everything you do will generate some form of feedback – what scientists call cause and effect. If you don’t like your effects (your income, relationships and everything else are ‘effects’) you simply need to change what you are doing (everything you do is a ’cause.’)

You have the power to improve every element of your life – so long as you learn from your mistakes and don’t simply repeat them.

As Einstein once said; “insanity is doing the same thing over and over – and expecting different results!”

.
Don’t waste time complaining about your problems, do something now and proactively direct the path of your future!

Increase your confidence – Make a mistake

By Guest Writer Jane C Woods – www.changingpeople.co.uk
This article looks at how you can boost your confidence! You can become much more confident by learning from your mistakes. In fact, making mistakes is one of the ways you can gain in confidence and add to your store of wisdom.
.

Internal Mail

In my renewyou personal development programme, I have a section called ‘Internal Mail’. This involves looking at all those messages we have internalised over the years telling us what we should, could, can, and can’t do.

There is a certain inevitability that participants focus on the messages that they want to change. Messages like ‘You need to have a secure job’ or ‘Girls don’t do that kind of work’ or ‘you’ll never amount to anything’.

In this article, however, I’d like you to think about those messages you have in your head which have helped you – which motivate and inspire you and which you’d like to pass onto others.
.

Significant Others

Much of the internal Mail that pops up unbidden into our consciousness will have come from the people who brought us up – our parents, family, guardians or teachers . And it won’t all be of the positive variety! But I suspect if you stop to think for a while you can find a few sayings, thoughts, or expressions which over the years have served you well.

I particularly remember a piece of wisdom that my father gave me; I’ve repeated it often when coaching. I had just left school and made a particularly unwise choice about which college to attend and gone, regardless of the advice offered to me!

After a term and a bit I returned home with my tail well and truly between my legs. Within the year I went on to study at a great University and all was well, but at the time there were all sorts of issues about money, changing courses etc that the prospect of ever getting it resolved seemed impossible. I felt that I had made a real mess of my life!
.

Paternal Advice

My Dad took me aside and said:

‘Well, you’ve made me a mistake, and everyone has to make their own mistakes. The clever thing is not to make the same mistake twice’.

The Path to Wisdom?

It was a really good piece of advice, and so very true. We learn, grow and develop by actually trying something out, doing something. Pure or intellectual knowledge of something does not actually mean we really know it and have learned from it.

In later years I came to realise it was a great piece of advice and had served me well; it had taken away for me the fear of making a mistake! I can’t in all honesty say that I have never made the same mistake twice (!) but I know that making mistakes almost always leads me onto greater wisdom and better decision making in the future.

Now, as a coach and trainer I often work with people who are stuck in unhappy situations, relationships, jobs, locations and so on, but who are so worried about the making the wrong decision that they choose not to make any decision at all! They re paralysed by the fear of getting it wrong!
.

Get it Wrong!

How do you learn? How do you gain in confidence? How have you ever learned anything in your life?  You weren’t born with all your qualities and skills in place. You needed to do something to acquire them and I imagine that you didn’t do everything perfectly first time.

Take learning to walk, for instance.  Human beings don’t arrive in this world with fully developed walking skills! We needed to be allowed to learn. If you get an opportunity, watch a small child learning to walk. They frequently fall over, get up and start again. Without any self consciousness at not having done it perfectly first time, they persevere.  Eventually they make that lurch unaided from chair to sofa and bask in the admiration!

As we get older most of us lose that confidence to simply give life a go and not worry about getting it right first time. We stay crawling, frightened of looking silly, failing, and doing the wrong thing. And we miss out on so much of what life can offer us.
.

Review Your Past

Think for a while of all the masses of skills and qualities you have acquired over your lifetime. There will be loads and I’m sure you can think of at least ten.

Driving, for example; you learned that because someone taught you, you watched other people driving, and finally, in UK at least, you took a test. You might have had to take it several times, you drove around with L plates on, you crashed the gears, and you probably stalled once or twice at a junction! But for most of us the inconvenience of not driving outweighs the fear of failure and so we plough on until we get what we need, a driving licence.

Are there areas of your life where your fear of getting it wrong, of making a mistake is holding you back? Maybe you want a new job but think to yourself ‘better the devil you know’. Maybe you want a better relationship but are fearful either of tackling the issues in your present one or of actively seeking a new one for fear of rejection or of making a mistake! It seems easier to stay not happy rather than risk losing what you have. You’re still toddling through your life instead of walking, striding, or running ahead!
.

Some tips to help you on your way:

1) Owning up to making mistakes can be immensely liberating. If you get it wrong say so. In most cases this won’t be the end of the world.

2) Think of all that you have learned in life through having a go at it yourself. Make a list.

3) Imagine if you had a second, third, even fourth spare life to live. What would you choose to be doing? Would you pursue your unspoken dream of becoming, for example, a ballet dancer? Well, probably that is an option no longer open to you but there are, for example, dance classes for every age and also classes in poise and deportment. You could try them and give yourself some of the benefits!

4) Think back to your internal mail messages; some should be deleted, but there will be some that it’s worth keeping and acting on. Decide on yours and write it inside your diary, or a place where you’ll see it often and go for it!

…and finally

5)  And now think what you would be doing this month if you knew that making a mistake was not the end of the world but simply contributed to your learning and development and to making you be the best you can possibly be!

WordPress.com – Simply the best!

By Jim Connolly – www.jimconnolly.com
Occasionally, you buy a product or receive a service that is ‘just so incredibly good’ that you want to let everyone know.  I have one such service to recommend to you today – that service is WordPress.com

According to Wikipedia, WordPress.com is a ‘WordPress-powered blog hosting provider.’  In real terms, it is an extremely easy way for you to get a polished-looking blog on the Internet very quickly and easily – for free!

This blog is hosted via WordPress.com and as regular visitors will know, it runs quickly and is 100% reliable.

“This is in stark contrast to my experiences with Dreamhost, a chargeable hosting service; which I had to remove a blog from after just a few weeks, because of the shockingly-poor, unreliable service I received!”

WordPress.com also benefits from an extremely strong support community – people who know the software really well and are always willing to help via the excellent WordPress.com forums.

The only quibble I have with WordPress.com is their decision not to allow users to add any plugins to their WordPress.com blogs.  This means WordPress.com blogs cannot benefit from useful things like contact forms or from advertising revenue etc.  In fairness, there are some very good reasons for not allowing plugins too.
.

Some WordPress benefits

There are way too many great WordPress.com benefits to tell you about in one post.  I personally love the fact that WordPress.com; handle all my back-ups, look after security and deal with all the software upgrades etc.
.

WordPress.com – Ultra reliable

WordPress.com blogs, like this one, are hosted on a number of different servers.  This means that the odds on a blog ‘going down’ due to too much traffic are remote.  I had one of my posts read by over 12,000 people in less than an hour recently – and the blog remained super-fast for all of them!
.

WordPres.com ‘gives you’ stacks of new readers for free!

The WordPress.com ‘tag’ system means people searching WordPress for topics related to your posts will be able to find you.  I get a huge number of new viewers every single day, because of this great feature.
.

Summing up

As you might be able to tell, I am a BIG fan of WordPress.com and the great people (paid and unpaid) who support it.  I have been a regular Internet user since the mid 1990’s and in my opinion, WordPress.com is without equal – not just in the blogging arena – but anywhere online.

Thanks WordPress!

A great mailshot and email marketing tip!

By Jim Connolly – www.jimconnolly.com
Here’s a great little tip to help you get the very best response rates from your mailshots or marketing emails.
.

Timing!

Timing can have a huge impact on the success of your mailshots or email marketing.  It’s simple: If your marketing material arrives at the ‘wrong’ time, you will get a lower response rate!
.

Never on a Monday

Marketing letters and emails that arrive on a Monday can easily get ‘lost’ with the mountain of weekend post / email.  You don’t want your letter being opened by someone who has a stack of mail on their desk, because it makes it harder to get YOUR letter noticed!

Equally, if your email arrives on a Monday, when the recipient is deleting all the spam they got over the weekend, there’s an increased chance YOUR email will get deleted too!
.

Seasonal marketing dips

You should also avoid writing to an industry during a time of the year when they are low on staff.  UK Accountants, for example, are massively busy during January and far less likely to be able to meet with you or buy from you EVEN IF THEY NEED your offering!  Research your target market and make sure you know when THEY are likely to be busiest. Generally, you should also avoid mailings during the August holiday period.
.

Quick email marketing tip

If you want to get the best possible return on your marketing emails, make sure they arrive during the working day; between 10:30am and 3pm is possible.

An email that arrives after your prospective client has deleted all their overnight junk mail, will land in a fresh, empty inbox.  This makes it massively easier for you to capture their attention!
.

PS – don’t miss this!

If you want to make your email marketing and mailshots more effective, here’s a great, quick tip (from my marketing blog)!

Confidence

By Jim Connolly – www.jimconnolly.com
Confidence plays a major role in the quality of our lives and the level of success we achieve.  I’m not talking here about our self-confidence, but the level of confidence that other people have in us!
.

I would like to ask you a question

When someone asks you how you are or how your business is – what kind of answers do you tend to give them?  The reason I ask, is that the way you habitually answer these kind of questions has a massive impact on your results!

The answers you give are part of what either builds confidence in you or demolishes it.  Let me explain…
.

Positive

When you answer these kind of questions in a positive way, it causes people to feel confident about you and your situation.  This is really important! In fact, your future success will always be in direct proportion to the number of people that ‘feel’ confident or positive about; you, your abilities, your career or your business / services.  After all, people only invest time or money in people / businesses that they feel confident about.
.

Negative

When we speak about ourselves or our business in a negative way, we cause people to lose confidence in us. We also find that people who speak negatively about their life, their health or their relationships ALWAYS attract others who are similarly pessimistic!  It’s hard to succeed when you are surrounded by pessimists!

In commerce, there are countless examples of companies who have gone broke, PURELY BECAUSE a false rumour suggested they were ‘in financial trouble’.  Very quickly – people’s confidence in the company starts to dip – so they stop using them (fearing they will lose their money.)  All of a sudden, that company REALLY does have a financial problem!  That’s how important it is to generate confidence in you, your business or your abilities.
.

Build a wall of confidence around you!

With confidence playing such a key role in your success, make sure that you create a wall of confidence around you.  How do you do this?  It’s simple!  If, for example, you are struggling in your career or your business, talk to people about the things ‘you WANT to happen’ – not what you fear.

Keep your focus positive and you will encourage the confidence of others.  When you have the ability to engender confidence in other people – you can get all the support, help or funding you will ever need!

Which is most important to you – Freedom or Security?

By Jim Connolly – www.jimconnolly.com

In life you get the opportunity to choose between two routes:

  1. The route to freedom
  2. The route to security
    .

If you choose SECURITY, you ALWAYS lose both!

Success is nothing more than freedom; freedom of choice, freedom from fear, freedom to live where you want, freedom to go where you want and freedom to be who you want.

Although freedom is the cornerstone of a successful life, very few people embrace the route to freedom. Instead, they take the route to ‘security’, which is why the vast majority of the population work all their lives and retire broke, on a small fixed income.
.

Taking the secure route

For example, look at what happens when ‘the average person’ decides to invest their money.  A high street bank will offer them a ‘secure’ way to invest BUT pay them a very low rate of return (known as poverty rates).  The bank then invests this person’s hard earned money properly and makes 500% or 1000% profit!  Ironically, the average person’s desire for security is actually what stops them from ever becoming secure!
.

The great paradox of life is that the road to security is actually the least secure route!

I once had a very interesting chat with a man who had joined a steel company when he left school and stayed with that same company his whole working life.  He told me how during that forty year period, he bought a small house when he met his wife, before having it repossessed 5 years later, when the company lost a major contract and put all their employees on part-time hours for almost a year.

He went on to explain that his salary throughout his working life was “way too low for him to save”; so his entire adult life was spent just above the poverty line and he had nothing invested for his retirement.

I asked him why he stayed working with the same company for 40 years, under such bad conditions. “Job security of course!” was his reply!
.

Look at the opportunity as well as the cost!

I am not suggesting that you should take unnecessary risks in your business or your life.  What  I am saying, is that you should look at both sides of a decision and not just the potential cost if it all went wrong.  You see, even with the best opportunities in life, there is always the possibility for something to go wrong. If you focus too heavily on the potential pitfalls, your natural instinct will be to do nothing.

You have to avoid this mindset because it is the hallmark of every single person and business on the lower rungs of the success ladder. They focus so much on what could go wrong, that they decide to ‘leave things as they are’ or ‘just hope things will get better’.  As a direct result, they miss every worthwhile opportunity that comes their way! The truth is that things don’t ‘just get better’ – WE have to MAKE them better!
.

The road to security is all about fear

Those who embrace it spend their entire life making decisions, based on what they fear – not what they want.
.

The road to freedom is all about success

Those who embrace it spend their entire life making decisions based on what they want – not what they fear.

By the way, if you thought that the need for security only ruined the futures of the unemployed and those at the bottom rung of the employment ladder you would be wrong!

I speak with consultants and business owners regularly, who have seen their turnover and profits either reach a plateau or start to fall.  In many cases this plateau has been damaging their business for many months (sometimes years), yet they decide to do nothing about it.

They moan about feeling unrewarded, they claim they want to become successful; however, they just carry on making the same mistakes and hope things will ‘just get better.’
.

Why?

Because they would rather slowly go broke than leave their current ‘secure’ route and get expert help from someone who knows exactly what they need to do in order to achieve success!

For example; a small accountancy firm joined my 12-month sales & marketing program. This worked extremely well for them and I helped them generate almost £150,000 in new business.

Afterwards, the senior partner asked me if I would help him acquire (buy out) one of his local competitors.  I wrote to the local competitor and received a telephone call from their senior partner.  During the call, he told me that he had considered joining my marketing program several years earlier, and that had he known then, what he knew now, he certainly would have.  Instead, he became an employee of his one-time competitor!

  • The first accountant joined my program because he focused on what he wanted (freedom).
  • The second accountant decided not to, because he focused on what he feared (security).

.
In both cases, each accountant got EXACTLY what they focused on!

After a lifelong study into human potential, the late great Earl Nightingale told us that; “we become what we think about.” He explained that the dominant thoughts we hold in our mind are what determine our future. This explains why so many of the world’s wealthiest people never graduated from a university and why the streets are filled with what the former American President Calvin Coolidge referred to as ‘educated derelicts.’  The person who focuses on fear will attract fear and the person who focuses on success will attract success.
.

The answer

The answer to the freedom / security puzzle is both simple and universal.

Whenever you find yourself making a decision, always check that you are making that decision because it’s the right thing to do and not simply because it’s the easy thing to do.

Why not take a look at your business and your life and ask yourself if you are making key decisions based on what’s easiest (the secure route) or what’s most valuable (the freedom route)?

If you want to achieve total success in any area of your business or your life, there is absolutely nothing stopping you; providing you get the expert help you need.  Everything you need in order to make a million (or another million) is out there; but only those who embrace the route to freedom are able to see it.

In written marketing – LESS is MORE!

By Jim Connolly – www.jimconnolly.com
Here’s a very quick marketing tip for you.  To improve the success of ALL your written marketing, use as few words as you can to get your message across!

Two powerful reasons why, with written marketing, less is MORE:

  1. By using as few words as possible, you remove all the dross and keep only the key points of your marketing message.  This makes your message clearer, more focused and easier for the reader to understand.
  2. Just like you, the people reading your marketing have NEVER been busier!  When someone opens a marketing letter, or sees an advertisement, they do a quick scan of it.  If it looks too long, many people will decide not to invest the time required to plough through it!  Most of the marketing letters, email marketing and advertising I see is AT LEAST 50% too long!

When your written marketing becomes clearer, more focused AND more people actually read the whole message – you significantly increase its potential!

I can change your life in 7 days!

By Jim Connolly – www.jimconnolly.com

There are numerous books, seminars and audio series out there that sell themselves with a claim from the author or trainer; that he or she can change your life. Some say they can change your life in 30 days, others promise to change you in 21 days and a few suggest they can change your life in 7 days.

These claims are; incorrect, inaccurate and downright wrong!

Firstly, no one can ‘change’ you!

A person changes or improves, only when THEY decide to. I can give you a strategy right now, which will make you vastly happier and wealthier, however, if you choose not to use it, you and your situation will not improve or change.

No matter how much I want someone to succeed; THEY decide if and when they are going to change their life – not me or anyone else.
.

Secondly, change does not take 30 days, 21 days, 7 days or 5 minutes!

The instant that you decide to change, is when you change. It takes less than a second. The instant the alcoholic reaches ‘rock bottom’ and says NO MORE, is the moment their life changes. The instant an abused wife decides she will no longer tolerate a scumbag assaulting her, is the moment her life changes. Change always takes an instant.

Be extremely cautious of anyone who claims that they can change you or make you more successful – because they cannot – only you can!

.
People in western culture have been programmed to look for instant gratification, thus a book or seminar/course offering to do the work for them (and quickly) is irresistible. So, expect to see plenty of titles out there offering you something for nothing! However, do not expect to see any results unless you use the information and ideas.

He loves to watch other people fail – but why?

By Jim Connolly
Have you ever wondered why some people take great pleasure in watching a colleague make a mistake? Perhaps you have witnessed someone deliberately trying to get a co-worker into trouble and wondered what motivates such behaviour?  In either case, I am going to show you why this happens and how to deal with it!  It’s all down to something known as ‘ranking’.
.

Here’s why it happens AND how to deal with it

As an employee, we have just two ways to increase ‘how good we look’ in the eyes of our employer or manager.
.

The first route is to become truly excellent at what we do:

This places us above all those in our team or organisation who are just doing enough to keep the boss off their back . Thus, our ‘ranking’ or profile increases accordingly. If we work hard enough and show the correct attitude, we can quickly rise to the very top of the pile. Fortunately, this is the route followed, to a lesser or greater degree, by most people in the workplace.
.

The second route is to stay as we are – but hope that the ranking or profile of our colleagues falls:

If Tom works in a group of 7 people and is an ‘average’ employee, he will have three people ‘ranked’ below him and three people ranked above him. However, if he maintains his current quality of work and the three people above him start making mistakes or the quality of their work decreases sufficiently, Tom is suddenly elevated to the top of the pile! This improved ranking happens, even though Tom has not actually done anything proactively to increase his value to the team or his organisation.

The major problem with using the latter approach to career development is that it simply does not work! Organisations and teams reward people that bring value; the greater the value the greater the reward. So, if Tom becomes the top achiever in his team, but he and his team are under-performing ineffective and failing to reach their targets, the team will eventually be replaced by more effective and productive people. No business can afford to employ people that are not delivering value.

Sadly, a sizeable minority of people fail to understand this and as a result, spend more time focusing on what their colleagues are doing wrong than on what they themselves could be doing better. These people are extremely easy to spot in any department or team. They have a tendency to gossip negatively about their colleagues and are always one of the first people to inform a manager or boss when someone else has messed up.

If you have a colleague that fits this description and it’s frustrating you, you will be pleased to know there is a foolproof solution: Just focus on what you are doing and do it as well as you possibly can.

You see, by focusing on your own effectiveness and productivity, you will actually be beyond their reach. Those who want you to fail need you to provide them with the ammunition first! By robbing them of the ammunition required for their pointless endeavour, you become untouchable. In my experience, these people always eventually press the self-destruct button on their career and are either fired or have to leave.

Never let your career be derailed by allowing those negative influences in the workplace to impact you. The route to career success is to constantly invest in yourself. The happiest and most rewarding careers belong to those who constantly invest in themselves. The very fact that you are reading this article proves that you are one of those rare people who already understand this.

Set your standards high and focus on your own effectiveness – you cannot but succeed!

Get YOUR Mailshot letters opened!

By Jim Connolly
When a company sends out a mailshot, it does so in order to generate enquiries or sales.  Of course, in order for these marketing letters to work, they must first be opened and read!  After all, you can have the strongest, most compelling and motivating marketing letter imaginable inside that envelope, but in order for it to generate business for you, the envelope must be opened.

Amazingly, there is comparatively little information out there regarding how to get someone to actually open the envelope (what marketing people call ‘the carrier’!)

Get your marketing letters in the right pile!

I was reminded of how poorly most companies deliver their mailshots earlier today, when the mail arrived at my home.  My wife Sharon divided the letters into two, unopened piles.  I asked her what the piles represented and she said; The letters in the left pile are junkmail – the letters in the right hand pile are going to be opened”

Now, my wife has no marketing experience, yet she was able to spot junkmail without even opening the envelopes, with 100% accuracy!

Get your marketing letters opened!

If you want to make sure your mailshot letters get opened, here are a few simple guidelines:

  • Make sure the name and address of the person you are writing to is displayed clearly.
  • Use ‘window envelopes‘ with the name and address of the recipient printed onto the enclosed letter.
  • Don’t address letters to a job title or ‘the occupier.’
  • Be extremely careful about printing any kind of message on the envelope.  If you really must have a message on the envelope, make sure it is written by a professional copy writer.  If in doubt, leave it!  Get the message even slightly wrong and you could find 100% of your letters remain unopened!
  • Don’t address the letter IN CAPITAL LETTERS.
  • Don’t use printed labels for the name and address.  These tend to be mainly used for mass-mailings, so people tend NOT to open them.
  • Don’t use highly decorated envelopes unless you want people to know that there’s a sales pitch inside that letter.

I have written a FREE, special marketing report for you, called “The Secrets of a Successful Mailshot.“  You can read it now at my main website www.jimconnolly.com

Knowledge is NOT power!

Jim Connolly
It has often been said that knowledge is power.  This is very definitely not the case!  Even so, it is repeated over and over again.  Think about it for a moment and it becomes clear that knowledge is not power.

For example, two people can attend the same seminar or read the same book, and yet achieve completely different results.  One uses their new knowledge to achieve massively more than ever before; whilst the other person goes away and elects to do nothing with this same life-changing information.

Knowledge is not power!

Knowledge by itself has no power! Knowledge only acquires power when it is acted upon!  If you learn how to speak fluent Japanese, that knowledge will be worthless if you decide not to speak or read the language once you have finished studying it.

Equally, if a motorist sees their low fuel indicator light is flashing – but decides to ignore it, they will still grind to a halt.  Just ‘knowing’ that you need fuel, is not enough to power the vehicle forward!  Knowing or knowledge, only acquires power when it is used in some way.

Knowledge PLUS ACTION is power!

Only when you gain knowledge or learn something of value AND THEN USE IT, will you have the ability to generate positive results.  That’s because knowledge PLUS ACTION is power.

The business owner, who studies marketing and then acts on that information to increase sales, has turned knowledge into power. She has mixed knowledge with action and because the law of cause and effect is constant, she will see results.  Had she studied marketing, but chose to do nothing with that knowledge, her results would have remained the same.  That’s because there is a world of difference between KNOWING and DOING!

It reminds me of a story I heard about 20 years ago…

Bob is sat at home in front of the fire on a cold winter’s morning. Suddenly, there is a very loud knock at his door – lots of knocks in fact! Bob opens the door and sees Jeff, his friend and next door neighbour. Jeff says; “Bob, grab a bucket and come quick!   I’ve just discovered thousands of gold coins in an old well on that land I bought opposite our house – It’s the chance of a lifetime to make yourself a millionaire in minutes – come on!!!

With that, Bob slowly closes the door and sits back down in front of his warm fire again, as if nothing had happened! Jeff knocks at the door again; Bob, come on man – grab your bucket and get going!” Bob replies; “But I don’t have a bucket!” Jeff looks at him and says; “well go and buy a bucket then!

Bob replies; “Have you seen how much they charge for buckets these days?”

Versions of that story have been knocking around for decades; because it explains so clearly the differing attitudes that people have. Some will act on information and make a million. Others will receive that same information and do nothing with it.

Take action!

Conrad Hilton once famously said; “Success seems to be connected with action.” How very, very true! The most successful careers and businesses belong to people of action.

Your future success will always be linked to your ability to not only gain knowledge – but to back that knowledge up with action.  Your decision to read all the right books, attend the best seminars or scour the Internet for information, will not take you any closer to where you want to be – unless you take action.

As former US President Calvin Coolidge said;
“The world is full of educated derelicts!”

The REALLY sad thing is that self-motivation – the ability to take action, is actually a skill that anyone can learn! I learnt how to motivate myself to get things done when I was 21 years old and it changed my whole life.  My income increased by 6500% (six and a half thousand percent) within 90 days and every area of my life was transformed.

That’s because I finally realised that action is the magic that turns a thought into a fortune.  ‘Knowing’ is not enough without ‘doing’.

First impressions count – even online!

By Jim Connolly
How many times have you heard that; “first impressions count”?  Well, it’s true – first impressions count for a great deal – especially in business.  This is because, the first impression a business or a person creates with a potential client, is what forms the foundation of their relationship with them.

If that relationship is built on a bad foundation, it will fail.  After all, no one buys from a person or business that they have a ‘bad feeling’ about!  No one is immune, even the world’s biggest company – just ask the marketing team people behind Windows Vista.

For example

I was contacted online last week by a total stranger via my Twitter account.  This person’s initial message to me wasn’t an introduction or even a simple hello – it was a full on sales pitch!  What was this person trying to sell?  I have no idea!  I just deleted his message as soon as it was clear what he was doing.

Approaching a total stranger with a sales pitch, instead of a friendly introduction, demonstrates a complete misunderstanding of how sales and marketing works!

Affiliates beware

Sadly, this kind of shoddy marketing is used by the huge majority of small, online businesses.  I get emails on a daily basis from strangers who want me to become ‘an affiliate’ of their latest ‘wonder product.’  Even though these people have not bothered to call me or build a relationship with me, they expect me to attach my good name to their business and product – neither of which I know anything about!

If you want to make a stack of sales online or offline, make sure YOU focus on creating a great initial impression in the mind of your target market!  Then, ensure that everything you do builds positively upon that strong foundation.

By the way, you can contact me on Twitter any time.  My username is @jimconnolly

Why does this always happen to ME?

By Jim Connolly
Some people will do anything to avoid responsibility.  Yet, we all know that the only way to succeed in your life, career or business is to accept full responsibility.  In this article, I am going to show you why so few people ever achieve the success they are capable of – but more importantly, I am going to show you how you can reverse the process in order to achieve anything you want!

Why does this always happen to me?

When a salesperson has just broken their company’s sales record for the 3rd time in as many months, they never ask; “Why does this always happen to me?” Likewise, you will not hear this question uttered when a hard working student gets their 5th straight ‘A’ or the champion boxer successfully defends his world title for the 10th time.

No, this question seems to be the sole domain of the serial-complainer!

It’ not MY fault!

Most people complain – but stay the same.  They will moan about a problem and how much it’s hurting them – but do nothing about solving it!  I spoke recently with the owner of a retail outlet, who was complaining about her lack of passing trade. I asked her how long this had been a problem; I’ve been here for 5 years now and we have never had any passing trade!”

This lady was treating her business as if it were a 50 foot oak tree that could not be moved. When I suggested she relocate to a better position, she looked stunned; “But I like it here” she replied!

“If you always do what you have always done, you will always get what you have always got!”

If you have a recurring problem in your career, your business or in any area of your life; there is always a reason behind it – cause and effect! The challenge for most people is that they become comfortable with the status quo. They refuse to change and thus, keep having the same problems over and over again.

For them, the problem is less painful than the thought of actually doing something about it!  As a result, the 1st January is NOT the start of a New Year – just yet another opportunity to relive the same old year over and over and over again!

“Is he rich?  Oh yes! John is VERY comfortably-off!”

Have you ever heard a wealthy person described as being “comfortable” or “comfortably off”?  Well, if that wealthy person made his or her fortune themselves, I can absolutely guarantee to you that they are NOT comfortable! In fact, all successful people NEED a level of discomfort in their lives! Successful people keep moving forward and to do this, they need to feel a certain level of discomfort with where they currently are.

Bill and Richard don’t need the money!

Do you honestly think Bill Gates kept running Microsoft for so long because he needed to make more money? Richard Branson was born in 1950 – As he approaches retirement age, do you think he walks around complaining that he STILL needs to work in order to bay the bills?  Of course not! These people keep going because they see things they think they can improve or create.  They were NOT comfortable with things as they were!

The ‘average’ person does anything to avoid discomfort!

In contrast, ‘the average person’ will do anything to avoid this same feeling of discomfort! That’s why the most successful products and services in our society are all aimed at helping us forget about the things we need to change! One of the fastest growing areas of the Internet is the development of ‘virtual worlds’. These virtual worlds have literally MILLIONS of members who ‘escape’ their real life for hours each day – pretending to be someone else! The market for; alcohol, gambling, cigarettes, credit cards, reality TV, loans, computer games, pornography and illegal drugs has exploded – because they all act as narcotics to take away the pain of looking at our lives and making the required improvements.

“So Jim – why DOES this always happen to me?”

The truth is, most people are not actually asking a question when they say “why does this always happen to me” – they are simply making a statement!  They are telling the world that bad things keep happening to them and the suggestion is that it’s not their own fault – it’s just bad luck or bad fortune or their star sign or that mirror they broke last week!

There’s no magic or mystery here

We know that everything happens for a reason and as any scientist will confirm, it’s got NOTHING to do with luck!

Why does Tom’s boss take him for granted? Simple, Tom’s obviously not providing his boss with something that his boss values.  Why does Mary never have enough money? Simple, Mary is either spending too much or she has not invested in increasing her market value to the salary she wants to earn.   Why does my partner treat me like this? Simple, because you allow him or her to treat you like that. Why did my sister get 200 Christmas cards when I only got 50? Simple, she sent 250 cards out and you only sent 60.

It’s all down to cause and effect – but isn’t that wonderful?

This means that YOU can have ANYTHING you want – WOW! All you need to do is decide what you actually want from your career, a business or any other area of your life and then commit to doing whatever is necessary in order to achieve it.

So, how do you find out what you need to do in order to have the career of your dreams, a profitable business that excites you or anything else?  Simple – you find someone who has already achieved whatever you want and ask them how they did it. Then, do whatever they did! That’s it!

Finally, allow yourself to experience some of the discomfort associated with whatever area of your life you want to change. That discomfort may well be the motivation you need in order to have people referring to you as, “comfortable”!

How to make more money

How to make more money – It’s easy!

By Jim Connolly
Right now, here in this article, I am going to show you how to make more money.  More importantly, I am going to show you how to make more money without working more hours or working any harder!

OK, before we start – I need you to answer two questions for me.  They are really easy and you don’t have to share the answer with anyone.

Here they are:

Firstly, are you happy with your current income – yes or no?
Secondly, how much money would you like to earn?

As you know, the vast majority of people complain about how little they earn.  Employees complain about their salary, business owners complain about their profits and their salary.  Ironically, the process of earning more (lots more) is actually extremely easy.  However, most people complain about their income and leave it at that.  They complain – BUT stay the same!

Here’s a simple two step process that anyone can use to MASSIVELY increase, their income:

Step 1:  Understand why you earn your current income

Your income is always a direct reflection of your market value. Obviously, as a person – a parent, brother, sister, son or daughter you are literally priceless, but if you are in the workplace, you have a market value. This figure is based on the value of what you bring to your employer or to the marketplace if you are self-employed.

A great way for any of us to ascertain our current market value is to honestly examine just how difficult it would be to replace us! So, if you work for an employer and you were to leave, how difficult would it be for your boss to employ someone to do the tasks you currently do?

If you run a business, how difficult would it be for the marketplace to find another equally good supplier of your product or service?  The difficulty or ease at which you can be replaced is a key determining factor in your income.  This explains why a hard working Nurse earns less than a Solicitor.

Does the Solicitor work harder than the Nurse – nope! I have two family members who worked as Nurses and I can assure you they work VERY HARD!  The thing is, there is a very limited supply of qualified Solicitors and fortunately for us all, every hospital in every town has a great team of dedicated, hard working Nurses.

Step 2:  To earn more, you must bring more value to your employer or your customers/clients Employees.

If you are working in a career that offers and values a professional qualification – get that qualification if you intend to stay in that profession!  If you would be of more value to your employer by being able to operate a particular software package, take the time to master that package.  Every investment brings with it a return.  The key is to invest in developing the skills that will increase your market value.  Ask your employer which of the tasks you do, he or she values the most and focus your efforts on doing those tasks superbly.

Business Owners

What guarantee could you offer that would increase the marketplace’s perception of your quality?  For example, I was the only Trainer in my area of expertise that offered a 100% money-back guarantee to delegates, if they did not experience immediate, measurable results on my seminars.  This guarantee had a massive impact on the value the market places on the quality of my work.  To make this offer, I knew I had to be able to achieve results with literally everyone I trained, so that’s exactly how I designed my seminars.  Is it a coincidence that I also earned far more each year than any of the Trainers I know – no, it is down to value.

The Training Manager of a UK Chamber of Commerce once asked me why his team were unable to literally GIVE their training away for free; when my seminars were selling-out at £500 per person in the same area, at the same time.  I explained to him that it was all about value - and that a FREE OF CHARGE course is still very expensive; if the people attending waste a day of their time and learn nothing of any REAL value to them or their business! It is all about VALUE - because people will happily pay for something they value!

Step 3:  Make THEE decision

Now that we have discovered that the way to increase your earnings is to either make yourself more valuable, if you are an employee, or to make yourself and your business more valuable, if you are a business owner; you now have a decision to make.

This is what I call thee decision on this subject – here it is:

Are you going to invest in yourself, so that you increase your market value and thus your income?

This is all about YOU – not your boss, your clients or customers, the marketplace or anyone else – it’s all about YOU.  The decision is YOURS, the rewards are YOURS the extra peace-of-mind is YOURS the quality of life improvements are all YOURS too.

However, most people get this the wrong way around! Employees wait for their boss to pay for them to attend a course or learn a new skill.  Employers often wait for a local grant organisation to pay for them or their company to invest in itself.  Isn’t that incredible – That a business owner would give the responsibility for their company’s development to a grant provider? All the knowledge you need in order to achieve any of your targets is already out there PLEASE do not waste your time waiting for someone else to pay for it.  Go now and gather the information you need in order to achieve your best results ever.

Sadly, most people suffer from what is referred to as, ‘the inoculation theory of education’. It is as if we leave school or university, get our qualifications and then use them to inoculate ourselves against ever having to learn again.  People often proudly state that they are still learning and that they do not know everything – yet their actions suggest otherwise!  They will waste their money on a trip to the local burger bar, but refuse to invest in their own development.

A few new skills are the difference between living where you want to live, or where you have to live – driving what you want to drive or what you have to drive!  If you are going to go to work anyway; decide RIGHT NOW to invest everything you have in making yourself as massively valuable as possible.
